What I've Watched In September 2021

By Luca Newton

Well, it's October, and another month is down... which is slightly scary with how fast it's going.. I watched a bunch of movies, however..

September has simultaneously been the most eventful month and the least eventful for films for me personally. It overall has been a quiet month for me, as I've really not went many places due to my sister being back at school, while I currently have no school. So I've watched a lot of movies.

However, let's not waste anymore time with this..

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Twice)

To start the month, I went to a cinema to watch the latest MCU movie, Shang-Chi. Now, I have already reviewed this film on this site, I'd definitely recommend a read, but I really loved it. It just worked on most fronts. I chose to go back to the cinemas to see it again with a friend who hadn't seen it, and I loved it all the same on that second watch. I'm sure you already know my thoughts on it. Super glad it saved cinema, as it seriously started a wave of studios being confident in releasing films..

Cinderella (2021)

I do not want to talk about this atrocity of a movie. I decided it would be funny to watch the brand new musical Cinderella, starring Camilla Cabello. It seemed like a hot mess, so I was hoping for an ironic viewing. It was just trash. The funniest part of it, is that the lead actress, Camilla Cabello. is a singer. Yet, she was embarrassingly bad at hitting some of the highs in the singing. Especially paired with Idina Menzel's singing with her in duet and being significantly better. It's boring, it's annoying and it just fails on every level.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Rewatch)

I decided to rewatch Spider-Verse, because I was bored. I don't really have much to say that I haven't already said. It's a masterpiece, and you know that's what I think. It didn't hit any different this time, stays at the top.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

After Shang-Chi, I was itching for some martial arts movies. I landed on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, because of the high praise for it, and the fact that Shang-Chi had inspiration from it. Also Michelle Yeoh starring in it helped too. I was blown away, I loved the movie. It's just an insanely fun action movie with tons of heart. The choreography is spectacular. Michelle Yeoh just stole the movie.

The Matrix sequels

They dropped the Matrix 4 trailer earlier this month, and I decided that I'd finally get around to watching Reloaded and Revolutions in the lead-up to that trailer. I loved the original film, heard mixed things on the sequels, but the sequels are becoming more popular and well-liked on Twitter, so I thought they'd be enjoyable. Unfortunately, I disliked both of these films. Reloaded was very boring and overly complex, but had one action scene with Agent Smith which was incredible, and definitely made the film slightly bearable. Revolutions....... God, what a miserable film. I didn't like that at all. I'm cautiously optimistic for The Matrix Resurrections..

The Martian (Rewatch)

I don't know when they added this to Disney+, but I wasn't aware it was on Star. When I saw it was, I chose to watch it again, after seeing it only once on a plane. I remember loving it. Well, I was right. I adore The Martian. It sucks you in for the entire time, between Matt Damon's life on Mars, and the people on Earth trying to rectify their error. Yes, the Earth stuff has some pretty typical stuff for this kind of film, but the writing is just so brilliant, I didn't mind it as much.

I Saw The Light

Honestly just watched I Saw The Light for Elizabeth Olsen. Was very dull.. But Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth were good, the rest of the movie was not..

Arrival

Okay, here we go. I watched Arrival for the first time. I had been wanting to see it for months, it was constantly staring me down on my watchlist, and I chose to finally watch it. Holy shit, it's a masterpiece. As soon as I finished it, I knew it was gonna become an instant favourite for me. Everything about it was top notch - the premise, the plot, the characters, the score, the acting, the cinematography.. It is the closest to a perfect movie I have ever seen. It really resonated with me thanks to Amy Adams' phenomenal performance, which was truly snubbed by the Academy, and her character's arc about grief. All paired with mind-bending twists and a hauntingly beautiful score used throughout the film. Just WATCH this film if you haven't already..

Gunpowder Milkshake

In the UK, Gunpowder Milkshake didn't get a Netflix release for some reason? It was a Netflix original in the US, but not here. Anyways, this month, Sky got a deal to release the film for free, as well as select cinemas. I watched this on Sky, as I was pretty curious to see the movie. It looked like fun. Well, as it seems to be a pattern with 2021 dumb fun action films, Gunpowder Milkshake kinda sucked. The writing was unbelievably dumb, and the actual plot was completely uncompelling. The action itself left much to be desired. This really tried to be this big fun stylistic action film that spawns a franchise, instead it's a generic action film with a coat of paint that makes it seem original.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Rewatch)

I'm not exactly sure why I chose to watch Rogue One again. It might've been because I saw more info on the Andor series, and saw people praising the ending. And I agreed, and had an itch to see it again after so long. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of it. I don't know what was it was this time, but it just never compelled me. The ending is the best part, and makes it overall decent, but the rest of the film was pretty bland and uncompelling unfortunately.

James Bond Movie Marathon

This month's article is a lot shorter because of this. I spent September watching the James Bond franchise leading up to No Time to Die, which I watched at the end of the month. I have a blog planned on my thoughts on the series, my ranking of the franchise and a specific little review of No Time to Die. However, that will come later this week, closer to when the film actually releases in the USA.

For now, I'll just say that I had a lot of fun with the series, and am an instant fan of it now. It was a great experience for me, watching these films with my Dad daily, and seeing films evolve and adapt, then going to a cinema to actually see a brand new one. I'll leave it that, see you all later this week for that Big Bond Blog.

That's all from September. Certainly a smaller month in terms of the diversity of films, but eventful in that I managed to see 25 films from the same franchise in less a month. What did you watch this month? Also would you like me to include shows I watch in these months?

Thanks for reading.
